Marimbas

Marimbas are a performing group, with membership based upon a selection process.  Students need to be able to play a steady beat, listen and focus carefully, practice self control with classroom behavior, stay current with other regular subjects, and love to be part of a team.  It is a fun group which works hard in rehearsal, and plays hard in performances.  Concordia Marimbas perform at school, for the Association churches which support our school and out in the public.

Choir

The Concordia Choir is made up enthusiastic singers in grades 6 through 8, many of whom have never sung before.  We have a good time singing while learning some basic music theory and good choral techniques, and then we have a chance to share it in performances at school concerts and at community churches.

I choose music based on middle school interest level, singability, and difficulty.  Our repertoire over the last few years has ranged from a roliicking, choreographed, 20-minute Disney medley, to the soul-filled “Joyful, Joyful” from Sister Act 2, to the poignant “In Christ Alone” (which brought a few listeners to tears).

Beginning in college, I have sung in choirs for most of my adult life, and it is when I am singing His praises that I have felt closest to God.  When I direct our entry-level choir, it is my prayer that for these students, this will be only the beginning of a lifetime love of singing God’s praises in many choral opportunities.

Drama

Drama Class provides an opportunity for students to explore creative drama techniques including role-play, pantomime, and improvisation. The class performs for the Concordia student body at least four times each year, including a drama competition in Portland, Oregon for the Lutheran Elementary School Tournament in February, and a big spring production for families at the end of the school year. This elective is open to 7th and 8th grades only, and class size is limited to 16 students who audition for a place in the class each fall.

Art

Art Class offers a variety of different mediums and techniques for students to explore. They work on 2 and 3 dimensional projects such as sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, mosaics, and collage.  After learning some fundamental basics and developing strong drawing skills, students are encouraged to use their own creative ideas to complete original works of art.

Leadership

This class explores what it means to be a leader in our home, school, work place, church, and in our peer groups.  Most importantly, guided by the scriptures and Christian values, students will learn tools which will equip them to be servant-leaders in their daily lives.  As middle school students prepare for high school and college, many leadership opportunities will become available, and this class is designed to prepare them for those.  Students will find many tangible ways to lead around school, for example, by helping to plan and carry out school activities, participate in mock student government formats, and take part in service projects.  This class is truly meant for students who seek to obtain and grow in their leadership skills.

Newspaper

Using Adobe InDesign, the Newspaper Class publishes a twelve-page newspaper each month for grades 6, 7, and 8. Students explore creative writing techniques and learn how to report news in an objective manner. They also have the opportunity to take pictures for their articles with digital cameras. Students need to have solid basic writing skills and self-motivation for this class, because the news never stops, and there is always a job to do!

Yearbook

The yearbook class designs the layout and the theme of the yearbook. The students take pictures, write captions and stories to create a keepsake of the unique school year.

They are always in need of quality photos from parents. Please upload them HERE or give your photos in jpeg format to Mrs. Pariseau.
